6 Step to Prepare For Your Full Kitchen Remodel

Okay, you’ve made the decision to remodel your kitchen. And you have a plan. You’ve selected an experienced kitchen remodeler or you’ve decided to be your own GC and hire the demolition crew, an electrician, a plumber and floor contractor and a counter top/back splash company.

You’ve also chosen your cabinetry, the countertops, your tiles, sink and faucet, the lighting fixtures and all your appliances so you think everything is all set.

It’s not!  Now the fun is about to start:

  1. You have to pack up your entire kitchen.
You’ll need to buy clean cartons and packing materials, e.g., bubble wrap and tape, so you can begin to pack up your dishes, pots and pans, utensils and whatever supplies you keep in your kitchen cabinets and pantry.  They will need to be moved out of the kitchen where they will be safe from dust and debris. NOTE: Be sure to label every box with what is in it, so you’ll know where to find something should you need it during the remodel.
  2. Prepare an eating/dining area
Your family will need someplace to eat – perhaps you have a folding table and chairs you can set up in another area of your home or a separate dining room where you and the family can have your meals.
  3. Set up your temporary kitchen
Figure out where you want your temporary kitchen. Do you have an attached garage that can serve as your space for appliances, like your fridge and microwave, with a sink for water and dishwashing during the remodel?  A basement or other living area can also serve as a “mock” kitchen as long as it is far enough away from the construction area.
  4. Let’s not forget about cooking
Do you have a microwave or hot plate so you can cook small meals and warm up food? If you have an outdoor grill be sure it’s in good working order so you can utilize it for your favorite barbecue dishes including meat, fish, and veggies!  A toaster oven can also be very helpful.
  5. Of course there’s always takeout! (So save those menus)
If a kitchen remodel is in your near future, start collecting coupons from your favorite restaurants and takeout places to offset having to cook every day. Takeout is a great option.
  6. A typical renovations usually takes about 6-8 weeks (or a little longer)
You’re going to be without a full kitchen for a couple of months ad it is an inconvenience, especially if you have young children, so we recommend that you prepare meals ahead of time and freeze them so that you can easily warm up in the microwave and serve.

Remember a kitchen renovation is an arduous and lengthy process because there are a great many components and tradespeople involved, so don’t be impatient with the process, with yourself and the situation. Look toward the end of the project and all the pleasure you’ll get out of cooking and enjoying delicious meals served in your new kitchen in the near future with your family and guests.
